Tunduru urban water supply and sanitation Authority (TUUWASA) was established by Act No. 8 of 1997 on 30th January 2004. TUUWASA is responsible for the overall operation and management of water supply and sunitation services within the urban area of the Tunduru township which is the headquarters of Tunduru District, in Ruvuma Region. Currently its area of operation has a total population of 40,484 whereas the population served is 25,800.

The water sources for TUUWASA water supply scheme and spring, streams and boreholes. The first sheme was constructed in the year 1953 with water from the Mlingoti pumping station which is still in use. Later, new sources were constructed to meet water demand of the town. Currently the scheme has three types of water sources, which are Nanjoka Spring, five borecholes and Mlingoti stream source.

The current average water demand for this town is estimated to be 2,571m3 Per day while the total water production was 1188m3/day from all its source (When there are electricity) and 348m3 Per day only when there is no electricity (Water from gravity scheme source only).This capacity it is not fully utilized owing to dilapidated distribution network and un-rehabilitated schemes. The utility does not have itsi own office, but using two rooms in the DWE's office building. The utility has no water treatment facility and also water quality monitoring plan is not in place. The total length of the distribution system is 23.1Km and water supplied at an average of 8 hrs Per Day. They have 5 storage tanks with a total capacity of 370m3. There is no water quality monitoring done. The town has no average system and onsite sanitation is monitored by the Tunduru District Council.
